Zero Goals in Eight Games: McInnes Stays Patient With £8.5m Winger Kim
In comments made to the press following Rangers‘ 4-0 Scottish Premiership win over St Johnstone at Ibrox Stadium on October 24, 2026, manager Derek McInnes addressed the early form and adaptation of summer signing Min-Su Kim. The result helped Rangers maintain pace in the domestic title race following a prior 2-2 draw with Dundee.
The 20-year-old South Korean winger arrived from Girona during the summer transfer window on a contract running through 2030 for a reported £8.5 million fee. Through his first eight appearances for the Glasgow club, including seven starts, Kim has yet to record a goal or an assist, though he has struck the woodwork twice.
Derek McInnes evaluates Min-Su Kim’s pressing and tactical influence
Addressing Kim’s frustration over his lack of direct output in the final third following the victory over St Johnstone, Derek McInnes highlighted the winger’s off-ball work rate and high-volume counter-pressing.
“It’s the first thing he talks about when he hasn’t scored, and I’m trying to get him away from that. He’s so desperate to score and do well. I think it’s clearly annoying him that he’s hit a couple of posts now, but his overall game and his threat were superb today. He’s so willing. His counter-press is magnificent. His confidence in possession, his work rate and the quality he shows throughout the game are outstanding. Obviously, he doesn’t get his goal. Bouanani got one last week, which was great, and Gassama got a brilliant assist today. Minsu did everything but score. I’m fortunate that we’ve got good wide players, but they know the importance of getting their numbers up, and nobody feels that more than Minsu.”
Tactically, Kim’s tendency to drift inside from wide positions creates space for overlapping full-backs to operate along the touchline, while offering central passing options between opposition defensive and midfield lines. While fellow wide options Badredine Bouanani and Djeidi Gassama have provided direct goal contributions in recent fixtures, McInnes continues to rely on Kim’s structure without possession to establish early defensive transitions high up the pitch.
