Early Concessions and Squad Emergency Cost Inter in 3-1 Derby Defeat
Speaking in post-match comments following Inter Milan’s 3-1 defeat to AC Milan at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, midfielder Nicolo Barella reflected on the performance that ended his side’s unbeaten start in Serie A.
The Italy international addressed early defensive lapses that allowed Christian Pulisic and Adrien Rabiot to establish a two-goal lead for AC Milan inside the opening 10 minutes. Although Alessandro Bastoni cut the deficit with a first-half header, Diego Moreira restored Milan’s cushion prior to the interval, prompting questions surrounding head coach Cristian Chivu’s tactical adjustments.

When asked about Inter’s early performance on the pitch, Barella acknowledged that early execution issues directly undermined the team’s match strategy.
“We paid for individual and collective mistakes. Sometimes, as I’ve said when we’ve won as well, we haven’t always approached it at our best. Not to say badly, but we need to improve. There have been derbies where we’ve played well and not won, others where we’ve played badly and drawn. There have been ups and downs in those derbies. Today we needed to do better to keep our [unbeaten] streak alive.”
Barella highlighted how early lapses dictated the flow of the match, forcing Inter to chase the fixture after conceding twice in rapid succession. The early concessions disrupted Inter’s defensive structure, exposing space that AC Milan exploited through Moreira’s two assists and late first-half free-kick. Barella noted that despite previous derby results yielding mixed outcomes regardless of performance quality, failing to establish operational control early proved fatal to Inter’s unbeaten campaign.

coachTactical Shift Driven by Squad Illness and Attacking Emergency
Addressing questions regarding the head coach’s decision to deploy an unfamiliar single-striker setup in a derby fixture, Barella defended the tactical change as an unavoidable response to personnel availability.
“We were in a bit of an emergency because Pio and Bonny both had a fever. Not having fresh changes in attack conditioned the coach’s choices, and he had to try to do something different. It’s the attitude that counts in these games. We struggled to get going, but we realised that too late. The formation doesn’t matter.”
Chivu opted for a lone striker system for the first time this season, a structure necessitated by health and fitness constraints across the frontline. With key forward Lautaro Martinez sidelined by injury and both Pio Esposito and Ange-Yoan Bonny affected by fever, Inter lacked available options to rotate within their standard two-striker formation. Barella emphasized that structural shifts were secondary to on-field execution and initial intensity, rejecting assertions that the tactical setup caused the final result.
