Tuchel Excludes Palmer From England Roster Over Missed Training Camps
Speaking in a press conference at Wembley Stadium, England head coach Thomas Tuchel addressed media inquiries regarding his 25-man squad selection for upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Croatia and Spain. The briefing centered on squad continuity and strict training camp attendance principles following the latest selection process.
Tuchel confirmed that Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer was left out of the group despite being fully fit and available for selection. The manager highlighted that repeated absences from recent international assemblies played a decisive role in the decision, favoring players who established momentum during previous camps.

Addressing Palmer’s exclusion from the attacking midfield rotation, Tuchel emphasized that selection relies heavily on active participation during squad assemblies rather than reputation alone.
“It counts when you are in camp and I just said it last time, he misses too many opportunities to impress. It was a long camp. It was two-and-a-half weeks and the players and the boys who were in camp built something extraordinary throughout these weeks. That’s why the credit goes to them. The trust is for them. If you are in camp, this is your chance to impress. So it’s not personal. We will never assume that Cole is not in the mindset to come and desperate to play for his country, but the competition is on and the players who were in camp did an amazing job and kept their place.”
Tuchel retained a deep group of central options including Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, Morgan Gibbs-White, and Eberechi Eze, while introducing Josh King and Jobe Bellingham. The structural decision rewards the unit that took part in the extended September gathering, establishing clear tactical priority for upcoming fixtures.

Continuing his review of squad selection criteria, Tuchel reinforced the standard expected of players seeking international inclusion ahead of the upcoming fixtures.
“It’s always about the ones who are in camp. It’s always the ones who don’t withdraw and who walk the talk and come to camp and show that it matters and put the quality in. This is always what we will reward. That was always the message very, very early since we took charge, that it matters if you are in camp and it matters what you do in camp. And the last camp was an excellent one.”
The commitment-focused approach establishes a firm boundary across the squad after five players withdrew from the previous assembly. While vice-captain Declan Rice returned to the group following extensive participation at the World Cup, other missing players were left out as the manager maintained focus on training continuity.
While Palmer’s absence raised questions regarding physical fitness, Tuchel clarified that the decision was based strictly on squad dynamics and training attendance. Palmer remains uninjured and has featured across Chelsea’s domestic fixtures this season.
