Six-week layoff confirmed for Napoli after McTominay heart procedure
Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay will remain sidelined until October after undergoing heart ablation surgery to treat a mild arrhythmia. The condition was identified following Napoli’s match against Como, requiring a medical procedure to correct the issue. Official medical protocols mandate a structured multi-week recovery period before the Scottish international can safely rejoin squad activities.

McTominay’s absence compresses Napoli’s midfield depth during a crucial stretch of the Serie A campaign. The loss of his physical presence and central box-to-box coverage leaves the squad reliant on remaining options across the middle third. With midfielder Giovane also sidelined following surgery, selection options in central areas are temporarily restricted.

The corrective procedure required heart ablation surgery to stabilize the arrhythmia. Following the operation, McTominay must complete a mandatory 28-day course of blood-thinning medication, during which full contact training is prohibited.
Speaking to DAZN Italia ahead of Napoli’s fixture at San Siro against Inter Milan, sports director Giovanni Manna detailed the mandatory recovery sequence and confirmed parallel discussions regarding a contract extension.

player“Scott is having an ablation surgery and also needs some blood-thinners afterwards, so thatβs at least 28 days to resume training, and then at least another couple of weeks, so we hope to have him back in October,” Manna said. “We are talking about the contract, there are another two years left on the current deal. We want to do a new deal, so does he, we just need to get on the same page.”
The recovery schedule establishes a strict linear pathway back to competition. Once the 28-day medication window concludes, McTominay will undergo approximately two weeks of reconditioning and squad training before becoming available for matchday selection in October.
