Bayern's 58-Match Streak Snapped in 0-0 Schalke Draw After Squad Benchings
Bayern Munich saw their 58-match competitive scoring streak come to an end following a 0-0 draw against Schalke 04 in Gelsenkirchen on Saturday. Head coach Vincent Kompany started forward Harry Kane and winger Michael Olise on the bench, entering the fixture with altered attacking options due to international scheduling constraints.

Kompany introduced both Kane and Olise as second-half substitutes, but Schalke goalkeeper Loris Karius made crucial late saves against both attackers to preserve the scoreless result. The manager explained that resting both players was necessary to manage fatigue following their delayed return from World Cup duty and a midweek DFB-Pokal fixture in Osnabrück. Bayern held dominant territorial control throughout the match, though Kompany noted his side failed to maintain enough tempo over 90 minutes to break down Schalke’s defensive block.

clubThe result represents the first time Bayern Munich failed to score in a competitive fixture since a 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in July 2025. The early-season point leave the German double winners managing player fatigue amid tight turnarounds across initial domestic competitions.
“The decision with Michael and Harry was simply completely rational,” Kompany said. “The two of them only came back very, very late from their holiday after the World Cup. It’s not a given that you can just say: ‘You play 90 minutes, 90 minutes, 90 minutes.’ The cup match in Osnabrück also took energy. You can’t always put that full workload on these guys.”
“Our story was that we didn’t score and the opponent went home without a shot,” Kompany added. “You need 90 minutes of pressure against defenses like this until they crack. We didn’t quite manage that today because we took the tempo out of the game several times.”
